6/17/08 Tuesday

Class went on longer today; about 4 hours instead of 2. We were killing time until we took our field trip to meet the Mayor of Bath. We stayed with Dennis and Jill at their flat (this is also where class is held daily), discussing cultural communication and the textbook. At 12 pm, they fed us lunch and by 1 pm, we were off.

We followed the Avon River along the path that former Mayors have taken in the past to get to the office. We stopped to help a couple open a loch (lock), and it turns out the couple were old friends of Dennis' and Jill's. They haven't seen each other for 10 years. Once the loch (gate) was open, water filled the canal. Really cool.

We had a audience with the Mayor at 230 pm. He, his wife, and administrative assistant met us and gave us a brief history about the mayorship. Mayors serve one year terms. They asked all of us to sign their visitor's book, and inside it was Queen Elizabeth's signature from when she visited back in the 50s. (She also signed the book as Princess ahen she was there in the 40s.)
